“Stand Back”—Stevie’s 63 Today

“Stand Back”—Stevie’s 63 Today: "

I tried to get Jocelyn to Duel with me this month over the first new Stevie Nicks album in 10 years, In Your Dreams, but she was hearing none of it, even though she’s the most frequent blogger of Nicks news ’round these parts. Had we bantered, I would’ve told Jocelyn I think Nicks is a lot like her friend Bob Dylan, as far as the way she vocally bends and stretches the notes of her classic material, and turns each performance into a unique special event rather than a by the numbers reenactment of her recordings. I also might’ve added that a couple of years ago, I saw her arriving late to a Los Angeles appointment and heard her apologize to her companions quite sincerely, “It’s still a bit early for me.” And that instead of busting out laughing (it was 2 p.m.), it somehow made me feel relief. Relieved to know that there are still artists who live by their own clocks and their own sense of time, who are doing their own thing, with ’70s-style—and that she looked great, without makeup. And oh yea, that bit about her being a witch…still not true, just rock myth. Coming right up, we’ve got video of Nicks in full drag, performing her Fleetwood Mac signature song, “Rhiannon”, after she’d gone solo. It has an interesting Edith Piaf-like intro on it, and I’m pretty sure “she was high as a kite back then,” which might go without saying, but I’m saying it anyway—as a way of saying Happy Birthday to Stevie Nicks—and because I didn’t get to say it to Jocelyn.
