About a month from now on February 22, Drag City will be ushering out a special new single from Bonnie “Prince” Billy and the Cairo Gang. For one thing, it’ll be a ten-inch, which is unusual for a two-song single. The songs, “Island Brothers” and “New Wonder”, are culled from their live sets of the past couple years, and will be packaged in artwork consisting of photos by New York Times shutterfly Damon Winter, taken in post-quake Haiti over the past year. Proceeds (“as much of the profits as possible” says the press release) will be funneled into the effort to install water purification systems that local Haitians can then operate themselves, thus aiding in the fight against the massive cholera outbreak as well as other waterborne pathogens. ”It isn’t merely two more songs from the fellows who put together The Wonder Show Of The World for themselves and for us,” Drag City says. “It is also a response to an event, an attempt to use music to do something good for people who need more than just great music in their lives.” The organization actually receiving the money and doing the work is a faith-based non-profit called EDGE Outreach, dedicated to implementing sustainable solutions for clean water, hygiene and sanitation in the name of the lord.
After the jump, check out a couple videos of BPB and the CG playing the two upcoming songs live in concert.
